21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

Bringing In A Second Opinion

For this assignment, I chose to read and write about Guy Kawasaki’s
“The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users”. I chose this reading because social media is something that really interests me and I knew I would enjoy reading this particular book.
  1. What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme of the book is that social media is extremely relevant in todays day and age and is used for so many different reasons. Also, it argues that if social media is used properly it can help one succeed in creating and developing a business.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I thought this book went perfectly with this class for many reasons. The first reason being that in this class we put all of our work on our own personal blogs that can be seen and commented on by our classmates, this right here is a form of social media. The second reason is that, my own personal business in which I am custom designing and painting on pairs of shoes, is completely run through my Instagram account, a huge social media platform. Learning and mastering the art of posting on social media is a huge factor of what makes my business successful.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
If I had to create an assignment based off this reading, I would most likely have students write about four different social media platforms that can be used for a business. I would have them describe each platform and explain what information should be shared on each of these forms of social media to best connect with potential customers.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

The biggest insight and takeaways I got from this book had to do with how to further connect with customers/followers through responding to their comments. The book said that is okay to respond to negative comments by customers as long as you only respond one time. Responding to my customers comments on my Instagram whether it is positive or negative, is something I very rarely do and should start to do more.

  1. Hi Hannah,

I like how you took away from the book that you can respond to negative comments as long as you respond at one time. From the book that I read, I also took away a valuable tool that I can use for not only this class but for my future and Entrepreneurship and starting my own business or product. Many of these books teach you valuable lessons that we can take away from them, and I think you did a good job at displaying this.

  2. Hey Hannah. This was a great read because as social media continues to grow, it seems that it has become an strong suit in gaining power and public awareness. This ties well to the class because we are posting everything we do on a blog and that is basically social media. I really enjoyed the assignment you created for this class. I am in charge of my father's social media accounts and i find it super important for everyone to understand social media platforms. Great job.
