Forming an Opportunity Belief: A Twist on Opportunity Identification

From my experiences many of the students around me at the University of Florida, especially my close acquaintances  have a very hard time managing their time and schedules. They are constantly complaining about being stressed out and not having enough time to study and succeed in their classes, go to the gym, and have fun with friends. What I have noticed is that students simply do not know how to maximize their time and organize their day so they can fit every aspect of their lives into each day without spreading themselves too thin. I think that most students would benefit from using a calendar or having a specific everyday “to-do list” to help them stay on track and organized.

. The first person I spoke to was my best friend Amber who is a first year nursing student at the University of Florida. Amber has always had an easy time with school because she is very smart and can stay focused for long periods of time. However, she has been complaining a lot about her new nursing schedule. She has to get up early for class every morning and stays up late every night studying. When I asked amber if she has ever used a calendar she said no because she usually can remember all her assignments without one. Due to her new and harder class schedule she said she is considering buying one to help her organize her time better.

. The second person I spoke to is my freshman friend Molly. Molly is a very creative and bright person but has a hard time getting her assignments finished on time. Before her first year at the University of Florida her mom bought her a small note book with a calendar inside. Molly told me she was reluctant to use it at first but said for the last week she has been writing in it more and more and her and finds herself feeling more on top of her work and less stressed.

. The last person I spoke to was my roommate Morgan. Morgan is a very hard worker who is constantly writing tasks down and constantly studying. I have known Morgan for three years now and she somehow has great grades, is involved in many clubs, and is the social chair for a sorority. I asked Morgan what her secret is to be able to stay on top of everything. Her answer was simple, “I am addicted to making to-do lists.”

Summarize: Many people are like my friend Molly who can be reluctant to write things down or try new ways of staying organized. However, almost everyone can benefit from using a calendar or a “to-do list.” This belief has inspired me to get organized myself and I will be beginning to write a “to-do list” starting today and using my reminder app on my smart phone.

  1. I’ve had a similar experience with the issue of learning to manage my time. It’s nice to see how you found a common, probably often overlooked problem students would have, and found a way to react to and resolve it. I think that type of thinking is exactly what the point of this course is, except of course the sales part.
